Everything about National Association of Realtors

Members of the National Association of Realtors are famously known as Realtors. It is North America's largest trade association. It is represented by over 1.2 million members. It includes National Association of Realtors institutes, societies, and councils that are involved in all the different aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries. This above mentioned association of realtors functions as a self -regulatory association for the real estate brokerage.

Overview

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) was founded on May 12, 1908. At that point of time, this association was known as the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges. Even the founding group was located in Chicago, Illinois. In 1916, the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges got their name changed to The National Association of Real Estate Boards. The present name was adopted in 1974.

NAR's membership consists of residential and commercial real estate brokers, real estate salespersons, property managers, appraisers, counsellors, and others people who are engaged in all aspects of the real estate. These members usually belong to one or more local Realtor boards or associations. All these members are pledged to particular code of ethics and standards of practice. This consists of duties towards clients and customers, to the public, and other realtors.

The local associations are actually required to implement the code of ethics through a Professional Standards Council or a Committee. The trained members of the association usually form hearing panels charged with the responsibility of hearing and evaluating evidences from complaints that are filed by the public or other members against the association members for violations of the code of ethics.

If the panel is able to find member who have violated the code of ethics, or disciplines, then they will be recommended may be one or more of the following. A letter of warning or rebuke, suspension or expulsion of membership, fines up to $5,000 and probation. The NARS is also a member of the real estate roundtable; this is a lobbying group in Washington DC.

Trademark Status

It is observed that realtor is one of the most frequently-used words in many countries all across the globe. It is mainly used to describe any person or company involved in the real estate trade, regardless of their NAR or American residence status.

Multiple listing service used by NAR

It is observed that the NAR is responsible for governing hundreds of local multiple listing services. These multiple listing services are then used by the information exchanges all across the nation by real estate brokers. There are few multiple listing services which are independent of NAR. This membership is only limited to licensed brokers and their agents.

It is observed that this is a complicated arrangement, but NAR is responsible for setting the policies for most of the Multiple Listings Services. These policies allow participants to limit access to individual brokers.

Educational Requirements

The Realtors are required to update their acquaintance with the code every four years by taking a course. These courses are available online or "live". Realtors, who are members of NAR, have the option of studying additional certificates. These courses are available nationwide.
